The Serpent in Quicksilver is a lighter album that seems to reflect a transitional period for Harold Budd. Lacking the weight and evokactive imagery of most of his work, the Serpent in Quicksilver is nonetheless an interesting, albeit short, body of work.

There are hints of what is to come; "The Wanderer" shares elements with "Gypsy Violin" on Lovely Thunder. "Children on a Hill" share's flourishes with The White Arcades' "The Dream of Real Sails"

The most interesting track is the the opening "Afar" with sliding, dreamy, pedal steel guitar from Chas Smith.
